Issue Remediation
In this article:

Issue Remediation is the process of identifying and resolving security vulnerabilities or misconfigurations. Organizations address  any potential weaknesses in their IT infrastructure, both reactively and proactively, to protect their data and systems from malicious actors. The goal of issue remediation is to identify, assess, and mitigate any threats that could lead to a data breach, but that’s not all. Proper issue remediation seeks to find and fix misconfigurations and problems to achieve optimal performance and a highly available system. This process includes patching, upgrading, and configuring systems, as well as implementing additional security measures to prevent similar issues in the future.

Who should stay compliant, and why?

Every organization needs to engage in preventing security threats from occurring or escalating. Certain organizations are required to demonstrate their compliance against certain security standards such as CIS, DISA STIG, GDPR, HIPAA, NIST, and PCI DSS  and other regulatory standards. By addressing potential threats as soon as they are identified, companies can reduce their risk of a data breach or other security issue that could have serious consequences. Remediation also helps to ensure that any existing security issues are addressed as quickly as possible. This helps to ensure that the system remains secure and that any potential risks are minimized. Challenges to remediation

There are an infinite number of issues to fix in an IT environment. Solving thousands of issues doesn’t mean that you are towards the end of it. It may not even be possible to reach an ‘end state’ with all issues fixed. The more organizations grow and the IT environments become more complex, the more issues administrators have to remediate. As a result, many admins only fix issues when it appears absolutely necessary, but unfortunately for most of them this might be too late.  IT administrators need to spend time detecting and analyzing, understanding the importance of any vulnerabilities or misconfigurations found, prioritize their response accordingly and lastly remediate those issues. The break/fix approach is one step closer to unwanted incidents like security breaches or attacks. Reactive troubleshooting is not a solution, but merely a survival tool.
